What is THCV?

THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It is similar in chemical structure to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) but differs in the length of the side chain – THCV has a side chain 2 carbons shorter than THC.

Commercial production of THCV products can involve both natural and synthetic methods:

• Natural production: Although THCV occurs naturally in cannabis, it is found in much lower concentrations than THC and CBD, making its extraction and isolation more challenging. Advanced breeding techniques are used to develop cannabis strains with higher THCV content – strains are grown to maximise the yield of THCV, which is then extracted and processed into different products.

• Synthetic production: This method allows for a scalable and efficient way to produce THCV, meeting growing consumer demand.
