What is CBN?

CBN (cannabinol) is one of the ten main cannabinoids found in cannabis, along with THC and CBD. This cannabinoid has mild psychoactive effects that are up to ten times weaker than THC, or none at all according to some studies.

CBN is formed by the breakdown of THC when exposed to heat or oxygen. It occurs naturally in cannabis in very low concentrations, usually less than 1 %. Freshly harvested plants contain almost no CBN.

Effects of CBN

CBN has several potential effects on the human body that are linked to its binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. Although it is referred to as a sedative, research shows that CBN alone does not have significant sedative effects. However, in combination with other cannabinoids, such as THCA, it can contribute to feelings of drowsiness, which can be attributed to the so-called 'entourage effect'.

CBN is also being investigated for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. CBN is thought to help to relieve pain through alternative mechanisms distinct from CBD and THC.

Research also suggests that CBN could be effective in lowering intraocular pressure and potentially treating inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. CBN has also been associated with antibacterial and neuroprotective effects.
