H4CBD is a cannabinoid that was created by synthetically modifying CBD. This cannabinoid is a hexahydroderivative of CBD, which means that four hydrogen atoms have been added to the CBD molecule. How is H4CBD produced? Simply put, we can liken the production process to the way margarine is made from vegetable oil.

H4CBD or THD is a derivative of CBD that is produced in the laboratory or semi-synthetically. Also known as hydrogenated CBD, this cannabinoid was created as an alternative form of conventional CBD. H4CBD is made up of two diastereomers, R and S, with the R diastereomer having noticeably stronger effects than the S diastereomer.

Is H4CBD the same as CBD?

The answer is, "No, it's not." Although the two cannabinoids share some properties, they are different molecules. For example, they have completely different effects, and the fundamental differences lie in their chemical structures and methods of production.

Both CBD and H4CBD come from hemp. CBD is a direct derivative of hemp, whereas H4CBD undergoes a transformation process, including hydrogenation, to reach its final form.

Because of this, H4CBD is considered a synthetic cannabinoid, even though it is only synthetic as margarine. Technically, it is also possible to synthesize CBD. However, there is no reason to do so, as this cannabinoid is abundant in cannabis.

Structure

H4CBD has been structurally modified to take on a different form than CBD. This is a chemical process that inserts hydrogen atoms into the selected molecule. Four additional hydrogen atoms, are added to the molecule, altering its natural properties.

Effects of H4CBD

If we look at a single study from 2006, we find that the study says that hydrogenated forms of CBD have an extremely high affinity for the brain's CB1 neuroreceptors. It is this finding that has expanded speculation that H4CBD may have effects up to a hundred times greater than CBD - at least in some ways.

A review of research from 2017 confirmed this assumption, but no new studies on the bioactive properties of H4CBD have been conducted.

H4CBD could provide users with something in the range of three times the potency of CBD. H4CBD is reported to offer 100 times the potency of regular CBD. However, we've already learned that even if this is the case, it only applies to the potency of CBD on CB1 receptors. And this efficacy was initially negligible for CBD.

H4CBD at CB1 receptors requires further investigation to draw any conclusions related to potential increased activity.

So calling out to the world that H4CBD is "100 times more potent" than CBD in all areas is a rather exaggerated claim.

Legality of H4CBD in the Czech Republic

The legality of synthetic and natural cannabinoids is currently the subject of much controversy. Government Regulation No. 463/2013 Coll., on the lists of addictive substances, defines what constitutes an "intoxicating substance":

  • Cannabis extract and tincture. With the exception of the substance cannabis extract and tincture, which contains 1 % of substances of the tetrahydrocannabinol group and meets the safety condition of the General Product Safety Act
  • Cannabis
  • Cannabis resin
  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): ?6a(10a)-, ?6?(7)-, ?7-, ?8-, ?10-, ?9(11)-tetrahydrocannabinols and their stereoisomers

Currently, H4CBD is not on the list of addictive substances.

What is the availability of H4CBD?

CBD is currently one of the most readily available cannabinoids. However, the demand for H4CBD is growing rapidly and this will naturally lead to the development of a wider range of products. High-quality distillates, isolates and finished H4CBD products are slowly appearing on the internet, heralding the birth of a whole new era of cannabis.

Cannabinoids can undergo the process of hydrogenation, which involves adding hydrogen atoms to the molecules. A hydrogenated cannabinoid is therefore a cannabinoid that has undergone hydrogenation. The effects of taking H4CBD appear to be similar to those of taking large doses of CBD, but we must bear in mind that this information is based on limited preliminary research and anecdotal evidence.

No, H4CBD and HHC are distinct, but in the context of their origins it is natural that the two cannabinoids may be confused. Just as H4CBD is the hydrogenated form of CBD, HHC is the hydrogenated form of THC.

H4CBD is not found in nature. This means that there are no strains of cannabis or hemp containing H4CBD. Since it is not possible to extract natural H4CBD, this cannabinoid can only be produced by hydrogenation.
