What foods can CBD be used with?

CBD needs help

Many people think that CBD in the form of 'miracle drops' (or in any other form) acts as a guarantee of health and can alleviate problems (pain, inflammation, eczema, sexual and reproductive problems, or the manifestations of autoimmune diseases). Gradually, more and more effects are being discovered, but research is still in its infancy. There is a need to understand the chemical structure of CBD, how it affects the human body, how it may interact with commonly used drugs, when its intake is not appropriate, how to react when results are not forthcoming. 

Endocannabinoid system

The endocannabinoid system, the so-called cell signalling system discovered in the 1980s, is absolutely crucial in the context of CBD. There is still not as much information available on the ECS as we would like. It is probably the most complex system in the human body. It is responsible for maintaining the body's internal balance (homeostasis) and influences many bodily functions.

ECS functions:

  • Regulates hormone levels
  • Reduces immune system reactions
  • Supports appetite and digestion
  • Balances body temperature and mood
  • Ensures quality, smooth and deep sleep

Most importantly, however, is the relationship of the ECS to the nervous system. It delivers information to the individual organs and controls how and when to do what. The endocannabinoid system gives feedback to the body that the message has been received.

Each person responds differently to CBD intake. It depends on many factors such as body weight, immune system, contraindications with medications being taken, and many others. However, few would think that the effectiveness of cannabidiol could be related to the composition of the diet. It's not so much that selected foods can't be consumed together with CBD, but the differences in bioavailability that is responsible for the rate of nutrient absorption into the body. 

Most people take CBD in the morning - they incorporate it into their daily routine. To further enhance the effects of cannabidiol, you can try to ensure the substance is absorbed as much as possible. You can influence this by choosing the right raw materials with a high content of medium- or long-chain fatty acids. These increase bioavailability and speed up the pathway of CBD to the body's systems.

  • Eggs
  • Meat

A difficult mistake to correct - hunger

CBD is generally considered to be a safe substance (it is also labelled as such by the WHO). This covers the fact that there are no common foods that are dangerous to take together with CBD. Grapefruits are also not excluded from treatment with certain antibiotics or antidepressants.

The biggest problem is a few drops of CBD without breakfast. This will drastically reduce bioavailability while leaving the cannabidiol "waiting" in the stomach until solid food is digested (at brunch or even lunch). Unfortunately, this is where it quickly deteriorates and the acids and chemicals from the digestive tract render the cannabidiol useless. Ingesting CBD on an empty stomach is thus more or less pointless.

With capsules, the situation is slightly better, because the oil inside is protected by the packaging and will "survive" much longer in the stomach. Therefore, the delay between taking CBD (in capsule form) and digestion does not matter.

Summary

The combination of healthy fats and foods high in medium- and long-chain fatty acids, such as X, Y and Z, guarantees good CBD absorption. The onset of effects is not long in coming. Ideally, cannabidiol should be taken shortly after breakfast, when the body is digesting. However, a hungry stomach is unable to process the substance and over time, it will become impaired.
