Making a hemp salve – recipe

Although the beneficial effects of cannabis on human health have been known for thousands of years, science is still discovering more and more therapeutic properties of this herb. One of the most prominent trends today is the use of cannabis supplements for topical use, i.e. on the skin.

These products, most often sold in the form of creams, ointments or balms, bring immediate relief from chronic or acute complaints (pain, itching, inflammation, etc.). Moreover, because they are applied directly to the skin, they do not have an intoxicating effect.

Preparing your own hemp milk or ointment is not as difficult as it may seem. And if you've ever made hemp butter or oil, you're in business, as both recipes are strikingly similar. Of course, there are many other variations. Before you start making homemade salve, be aware that if your salve cannot contain more THC than the legal limit. Many people therefore prefer to opt for legally purchased cannabis ointments, creams and balms, of which there is a plethora on our market.

Basic recipe for hemp ointment

Raw materials:

  • 7-10 grams of crushed dried cannabis (depending on potency)
  • 350 ml of coconut oil (or medical petroleum jelly, shea butter, etc.)
  • 80 ml olive oil (optional)
  • 80 g beeswax (optional)
  • baking tray
  • saucepan (or water bath pot)
  • resealable jar
  • fine linen
  • a few drops of (any) essential oil

Procedure: spread the dried and crushed cannabis on a baking tray, place in an oven preheated to 120 °C and leave to decarboxylate for 25-30 minutes. In the meantime, take a saucepan or water bath, add the coconut oil (or olive oil) and heat it over a low heat, stirring constantly. Then add the decarboxylated cannabis from the oven to the coconut oil and stir the mixture over a low heat for another 20 to 25 minutes.

Note: Keep the flame low, especially if you are cooking in a saucepan. Too high a temperature is not beneficial to the "carrier" or the active ingredients in the cannabis. After 25 minutes, set the pot aside, strain the mixture through a fine cloth into a jar and set aside to cool.

Preparation of hemp ointment with beeswax

After the mixture, put the beeswax in the same pot and melt it. While the wax is melting, slowly stir in the hemp and coconut oil mixture. You can also add a few drops of essential oils, such as lavender, peppermint or tea tree oil. Once the beeswax and the other ingredients are thoroughly mixed, you can remove the product from the heat and pour it into the containers you want to store the hemp salve in.

And the hemp ointment is born!

It may not last forever, but you can extend its life by storing it in a cool, dark place. Now all you have to do is apply the ointment to the affected area, get comfortable, relax and let it work. Its miraculous powers won't leave you waiting for long.

Additional recipe for hemp body cream

Heat the hemp ointment and add to it:

  • 240 ml aloe vera gel
  • 1 teaspoon liquid vitamin E
  • 2 tablespoons shea or cocoa butter

To make the cream more liquid, add olive oil to the mixture (you can use any oil, we recommend almond oil or vitamin E oil). However, keep in mind that the cream will still be quite thick.

Is there an allergy to cannabis lubrication?

The likelihood of developing an allergy to cannabis in creams and ointments is low, but it cannot be completely ruled out. Some people may also be allergic to various carriers (e.g. petroleum jelly) or to additional essential oils and the like. It is therefore always important to know the exact composition and it is also advisable to apply the ointment on a small patch of skin first. Particularly in the case of more severe forms of eczema, it is also quite often the case that cannabis ointment makes the symptoms worse for a while before they start to improve. In this case, it is ideal to consult a doctor.
Further procedures and variations for the preparation of homemade cannabis products for health and beauty can be found in the
literature on cannabis.

If you don't have the option of home preparation or are afraid of a conflict with the law, buy from us. Choose from a wide range of cannabis ointments - they do not contain more THC than allowed by law, but thanks to the content of other cannabinoids and various other natural ingredients, they bring significant relief to aching joints, warm or cool down strained muscles.

Various hemp balms and skin creams will then perfectly nourish your skin and chapped lips.
