Is HHCP the most potent cannabinoid?

What is HHC-P?

HHC-P (hexahydrocannabiphorol) is a synthetic cannabinoid derived from the popular HHC. It does not occur naturally in the cannabis plant and is produced in the laboratory. It is similar in chemical structure to HHC, but has a two-carbon longer alkyl chain. Pure HHC-P takes the form of a viscous oil. It is usually light yellow or darker amber in colour.

It shares a seven-carbon tail with the cannabinoid THC-P (tetrahydrocannabiphorole), so it is thought that the properties of the two compounds could be similar. In any case, the cannabinoids THC-P and HHC-P have very potent effects, with HHC-P often even being referred to as the most potent cannabinoid.

How does HHC-P work?

A longer alkyl chain means better binding to cannabinoid receptors, HHC-P binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system with multiple strengths. A 2019 study found that THC-P is 33 times more active on CB1 receptors than THC. It is thought that HHC-P might be even more active.

The effects of HHC-P usually come on in a few tens of minutes, but can last for several hours. Due to its binding to receptors in the endocannabinoid system, users may experience:

• euphoria
• stress relief
• relaxation
• better sleep
• increased appetite

It is important to stress that HHC-P is a new cannabinoid about which we do not have much information, so it should be approached with caution and started at a low dose.  

Side effects

HHC-P is a cannabinoid with psychoactive properties, so it can alter perception and cause (especially if too high a dose is taken) side effects such as:

• dry mouth
• anxiety
• redness of the eyes
• insomnia
• rapid heartbeat
• dizziness
• paranoia

The listing of these possible side effects is based on analogue derivatives or cannabinoids that are psychoactive. No studies have yet looked at the side effects of HHC-P, so it is not known how it affects the body and mind in the long term.

The HHC-P offer

Although HHC-P is a recently discovered cannabinoid, the product range is already quite extensive. Popular products include vapes, which in addition to HHC-P and HHC also contain CBD, a known non-psychoactive cannabinoid with therapeutic potential, cartridges, liquids, distillates, HHC-P hash and HHC-P gummies.  

HHC-P flowers of various varieties are also popular. These are cannabis flowers with a high CBD content and a permitted amount of THC that are infused with HHC-P distillate. The flowers contain a natural blend of cannabinoids and terpenes that work synergistically. This can lead to a stronger effect.

Conclusion

The newly discovered cannabinoid HHC-P has aroused curiosity and is causing quite a stir on the cannabis scene due to its alleged potency. It is a substance for which we do not yet have sufficient information and therefore needs to be treated with caution. Although HHC-P is not currently on the Czech Republic's list of addictive substances, use can carry risks in addition to its beneficial effects, such as a feeling of relaxation or more energy.
