Does a lot of CBD induce the same conditions as THC?

CBD attracts and does no harm

There are more than a hundred cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Some of these are still unexplored and little is known about their effects or negative impacts on the human body. The five most commonly mentioned are CBD, CBG, CBN, THC and, more recently, HHC. There are various links between them. However, cannabidiol attracts attention even without the help of the other components. It is not just for its potential positive effects in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, chronic pain and inflammation and skin conditions, or for promoting sleep and alleviating anxiety.

Both CBD and THC are compounds extracted from cannabis and interact with the endocannabinoid system and have very similar chemical structures. THC binds to the CB1 receptor and induces feelings of euphoria. CBD is different, it has zero psychoactive effects and inhibits the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol.

CBD is particularly specific in terms of dosage. The recommended amount per day depends on the number of drops and the concentration of the oil (it can also be taken in the form of capsules, candies or flowers).

CBD can improve physical and mental health, alleviate the symptoms of disease and promote quality of life. It is legal and studies regularly confirm its safety even with long-term use. Each effect (on sleep regulation, anxiety or pain and other problems) requires a different amount of cannabidiol, but usually the dose is in the lower tens of mg.

The result of the research was surprising. Experts dosed patients with as much as 1500 mg of CBD. Most of the participants did not feel intoxicated after taking such a high dose, but the effect on the mind was understandable. There was a slight decrease in energy and a compulsive need for sleep. However, all of this subsided within a few hours and there were no side effects that negatively affected the functioning of the body.

THC, CBD and a head in the clouds

In many ways, CBD works in the same way as THC. The difference is in the psychoactivity. That's what tetrahydrocannabinol is famous for. Cannabidiol has none of that. Even so, there are a few countries, such as Andorra, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro or Belarus, where production, transport or consumption can be a problem, with heavy fines of up to 50 000 crowns or two years' imprisonment.

There are products available on the market that basically use 3 types of cannabis extracts. CBD isolate and broad spectrum extract without THC. However, according to the theory of the entourage effect, the most potent in terms of effects is the full-spectrum extract (consisting of the full spectrum of cannabinoids from the plant used for production), which contains THC. Although the amount is regulated and reduced to an absolute minimum of between 0.2 and 0.3 % (in the Czech Republic, the maximum permitted THC content in products has been set at 1% since the beginning of 2022), it is a negligible amount and not so strong as to produce psychoactive effects even at the high doses of full-spectrum CBD from the above-mentioned research (1500 mg).

THC is not to blame

For example, in many states it is legal to drive motor vehicles after taking CBD. A normal dose is probably what counts. However, with 1500 mg of cannabidiol, THC (when taking full-spectrum CBD) can show up in a drug test.  And that can already be a complication leading to loss of employment or driving privileges. You would have a hard time explaining that you have taken thirty times the upper limit for normal use of CBD, you feel no negative effects, and the presence of THC is just a "byproduct" of your actions that does not affect you in any way.
