Boundless CFV Vaporizer Review

Boundless is a brand that has set itself apart with its product development strategy. Rather than focusing on a multitude of products, they have opted for greater specialization and continually improving the products in their offering by re-releasing them with better and more polished updates. Their popular Terp Pen device was upgraded and re-released as the Terp Pen XL, the CFC dry herb vaporizer was originally released in 2018 and re-released a year later as the CFC 2.0.

It is this process of continuous improvement that is behind the new Boundless CFV, which is being re-released with related improvements and modifications. With the improvements, the Boundless CFV does more but needs less to do it - the older version had various rings of wood and quartz for heat retention that could be placed in the herb chamber. The updated version also has a new kettle design, and is therefore incompatible with the old heating rings. This new device moves the convection heating front and center.

Set and accessories

The previous version of this device came with the aforementioned rings and a box that was quite large. The updated CFV vaporizer comes in a sleeker package that is packed with almost everything you need to start vaporizing herbs.

In the package you get:

Boundless CFV

  • Five stainless steel strainers to mouthpiece & strainer chamber
  • Water adapter
  • Filling tool + cleaning brush
  • USB charging cable

If you want to get the best out of any dry herb vaporizer, we recommend using a quality herb crusher. This is because well-crushed herb heats up evenly and delivers a better experience. One of the best is the 9-part aluminium crusher Anaxy.

Compatibility: Boundless CFV is compatible with dry herbs.

Design & Features

Although the product is a re-release, the brand has retained the original sleek body and swivel mouthpiece design. Everything that is new with the Boundless CFV is inside. Like the BoundlessCFC 2.0, the CFV is made largely out of plastic, but is incredibly durable. But knowing that it's made of plastic really suggests that this is more of a mid-range vaporizer than a premium piece. It has a matte finish that makes it comfortable to hold, and a knurled side for a more secure grip.

The previous CFV was equipped with wood and quartz rings that absorbed heat in varying degrees, creating a heating profile that was either completely convective or a hybrid of conduction/convection. While this was a very interesting and very forward thinking idea, it turned out to be rather awkward because you have a number of different accessories to worry about. Most people used only one ring instead of constantly swapping them out, and it was usually the one that provided the full convection experience.

On the side of the device is an OLED display that shows the desired operating temperature and battery status. OLED displays are usually quite bright, but in this device they are discreet enough. The display can also be inverted, making it suitable for both left and right-handed users.

Below this display are contrasting, glossy buttons. While the buttons on some devices squeak, the buttons on the CFV are firm, tactile and have a pleasant clicking sound when pressed. The downside, however, is that the buttons are placed too low on the device, so you'll have to put your hands in a slightly awkward position when adjusting the temperature.

Batteries

The battery in the CFV is 2500 mAH and lasts about 60-90 minutes on a full charge or about 5-6 sessions. This battery measures just a little less than the Crafty+, but more than other dry herb vaporizers.

60-90 minutes is definitely not a lot, but it makes sense when you consider that convection heating and the CFV session settings mean that the heating runs constantly. That's the price convection vaporizers pay for better flavor.

It takes approximately 2-3 hours to fully charge the device.

Water adapter

The ability to use the device with a water accessory is quite unique in a dry herb vaporizer, and Boundless has added this option to both the CFC 2.0 and CFV dry herb vaporizers. The included adapter fits male (14mm and 18mm).

How to use it

To fill the unit, turn the mouthpiece 90 degrees, remove it from the unit and uncover the heating chamber. The chamber will hold approximately 0.1 g of well-crushed dry herb. Loosely insert the herb into the chamber and insert the mouthpiece.

The interface is simple enough to use. Five clicks to turn on/off. Up-down buttons to adjust the temperature, and press both buttons to toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit. Once the desired temperature is set, the device will heat up to the desired temperature in 30 seconds.

Performance and vapour quality

As mentioned above, this CFV update places convection heating more front and center - no attempts at hybrid heating like the previous model. If you're wondering about the difference between convection and conduction, the short version is that with convection, the system is where heated air is drawn into the chamber to heat the herb. Conduction is when heat is applied directly through the chamber.

The quality of the vapor is a bit mixed with the device - on the one hand, the taste is excellent, where you can really taste all the subtle flavor notes of your herb because there is no burning and combustion. There's even the added option of using your used herb to make food. On the other hand, don't expect big and dense clouds of vapour, specially below 200°C. If you're craving massive clouds, you'll need to crank the unit to the max.

Convection heating allows the herb to be heated by hot air as opposed to direct contact with the heated surface. This process allows for smooth and tasty coatings that are not always possible with conduction-heated equipment. Convection allows for even heating, minimal or no combustion, and even the ability to create edibles from decarboxylated residues.

Bottom line

Overall, we appreciate a brand that is constantly improving its products instead of releasing new products into an already crowded space. The Boundless CFV is a straightforward, affordable and good convection vaporizer.

While it doesn't produce the greatest amount of steam, it is made for flavor lovers. With its price, it falls in the mid-level range overall, but can be considered an affordable convection vaporizer with a fast warm-up time, variable voltage, and the unique addition of a water adapter.

Boundless products are known for their minimalist design and affordable price. If you're looking for something higher end, we recommend the Crafty+ & Mighty.
