Boundless CFC 2.0 vaporizer Review

Boundless is a seven-year-old brand that aims to provide an effective and direct vaping experience, and looking at their latest piece, they seem to be making great strides in the category.

Set and accessories

Most of the accessories in the Boundless CFC 2.0 kit are virtually the same as what you get with most standard dry herb vaporizers. In the box you get the CFC 2.0 device, a cleaning brush, a filling tool, 2 mouthpiece screens, 3 chamber screens, and a micro USB charger. The only unique part of this kit is the hookah adapter.

Basically, you get everything you need to start dry vaporizing herbs - except a shredder. If you want to use any dry herb vaporizer and get the best out of it, I would recommend a good quality herb crusher. This is because well-crushed herb heats up evenly and delivers a better experience.

Compatibility: Boundless CFC 2.0 is compatible with dry herbs.

Design & Features

Measuring 13 x 3 centimetres and weighing just 227 grams, the device fits easily into a pocket or handbag. Its unique cone shape also sets it apart from other dry herb vaporizers on the market, which are usually more angular in shape. This new cylindrical shape is slightly more comfortable in the hand than the original CFC and is actually much better for quick and discreet vaping.

Another thing that sets it apart from other vaporizers on the market is that it's probably one of the few dry herb vaporizers that are made of plastic (as opposed to stainless steel body devices like the Linx Eden or Arizer Air 2). Plastic is clearly more fragile than steel, and the addition of a rubber outer shell seems to be a precautionary design choice. This grooved surface helps ensure that the device never falls out of your hand.

If we look at the Boundless brand as a whole, it's easy to see why they are appreciated for the design of their products. A well-designed product is one where you can take advantage of its features without having to look at the manual, and the CFC 2.0 is just that. The buttons are well placed, easy to access and are slightly more raised than is usual on other vaporizers. These buttons are also easier to feel, reducing the likelihood of accidentally pressing them. The integrated OLED display clearly shows the desired temperature, battery status, and displays an indicator when the device is heating up or already ready to use.

Mouthpiece

The conical mouthpiece is made of what Boundless calls "rugged construction materials". The mouthpiece of the previous CFC had issues with cracks and heat, which were eliminated with the 2.0 by improving the overall airflow in the device and adding a heat resistant coating.

Batteries

The Boundless CFC 2.0 is powered by a built-in 1200 mAH battery and will last 45 minutes of continuous use at 200°C, or approximately 7 full sessions on a single charge in the same temperature range. Obviously, if you heat the material at lower temperatures, the battery will last much longer.

The charging time is quite long - 3 hours, but if you're in a hurry, the device can pass-through charge - that means you can use the device even when it's plugged into the charger. The charging port is located at the bottom, so the wire won't get in the way if you're using the vaporizer while it's charging. The long charging time may sound a bit annoying for some, but considering how long the device lasts on a full charge, it's not too bad. If you're looking for a device with really long battery life, I recommend checking out the Arizer Solo 2.

Water adapter

The ability to use the device with a hookah is quite unique for a vaporizer in this price range. The included adapter fits male (14 mm and 18 mm).

How to use it

Using the Boundless CFC 2.0 is just as easy as using any other dry herb vaporizer, but if you're new to vaporizing, our detailed guide is sure to help.

  • Remove the mouthpiece to reveal the chamber, then fill it with herb.
  • Put on the mouthpiece and then press the power button 5 times in succession to switch on the device.
  • Use the temperature control buttons to select the desired temperature.
  • When the warm-up is complete, inhale from the mouthpiece.

Performance and vapour quality

Most vaporizers work on the same basic principles and the differences between a product that is in a higher class and one that is in a lower class are usually very clear. As a low cost device, the CFC 2.0 increases its value by adding some surprising features.

The CFC 2.0 has a conductive heating chamber that holds 0.5 g of herb. Although this is quite large, I do not recommend filling the chamber completely. This method of heating means that the heating element comes into direct contact with the herb, and that after a few drags you may need to stir the herb to get the most out of it. Leaving a little free space in the chamber means you'll have a little room to stir.

Variable voltage is a premium feature that is an extra with this inexpensive vaporizer. While it can be used at lower temperatures, it's great at microdosing. Don't expect to get thick vapor when heated below 190 degrees Fahrenheit. At these temperatures the steam is weak, thin and only slightly flavored. Even though the insulated air path is made mostly of plastic, it delivers some pretty significant coating at fairly high heat output.

The device will heat up to the highest temperature in about 40-45 seconds, and of course much faster if you set the vaporizer to a lower temperature. Because it is largely made of plastic, the device and the resulting vapor will get quite warm during longer sessions. This is where the added water adapter comes in handy. Because water filtration cools and rids your steam of impurities.

Bottom line

Not much is expected from vaporizers in this price range, and the CFC 2.0 defies this in several interesting ways. The CFC 2.0 remains as a straightforward, hassle-free, and affordable dry herb vaporizer, but it stands out in the market by adding premium features like variable voltage, OLED display, and long battery life.

It is also much more compact than other dry herb vaporizers in this price range. I would recommend it as a vaporizer for beginners. The fact that it's made of plastic means it's not exactly the most durable, so you may need to be a little more careful. But the material used doesn't hinder the performance in any way. The Boundless CFC 2.0 produces decent and tasty vapor at the right temperatures.
